- This treatment may increase mobility in patients with chronic low back pain and could provide longer-lasting relief than a steroid injection.

What is Lumbar Radiofrequency Ablation?
Lumbar radiofrequency ablation is a unique treatment that utilizes low frequency electrodes to cauterize damaged nerves sending pain signals to the brain. This treatment may be recommended for those with chronic low back pain because it often results in several days, weeks or months of pain relief. Radiofrequency ablation is also ideal for chronic pain patients because it can be performed few times a year to provide the most relief.
Who Benefits from Lumbar Radiofrequency Ablation?
Patients with pain, tenderness or stiffness in the lower region of the spine (low back) may benefit from lumbar radiofrequency ablation. Moreover, individuals who experience similar discomfort in the neck or shoulders and have difficulty with certain ranges of motion or mobility may also benefit from the procedure because it can be performed in other areas of the spine.
What Can I Expect Post-Procedure?
Patients may not experience full relief from their back pain for at least two to three weeks after the procedure. The reason for this being, it takes time for the affected nerves to completely lose function and stop sending pain signals to the brain. However, a few days after radiofrequency ablation, patients typically experience a gradual decrease in pain with continued improvement for weeks or months to follow. Nerves do repair themselves, so it’s important patients discuss the possibility of additional treatments with Dr. Arun Kandra and Dr. Laszlo Szollas for substantial pain relief.
